[origin: WO2016020394A1] The invention relates to an elevator system (10) comprising a vertical shaft (12) and at least two cars (14, 16) which are arranged one over the other in the shaft (12) and each of which can be moved upwards and downwards. A first car (14) is coupled to a first drive (20) and to a first counterweight (25) via first support means (18), and a second car (16) is coupled to a second drive (28) and a second counterweight (36) via second support means (26). The elevator system also comprises a machine area (38) which adjoins the shaft (12) and which is spatially separated from the shaft. The first drive (20) is arranged outside of the shaft (12), and the second drive (28) is arranged at least partly within the shaft (12).
