[origin: WO2016023772A1] The invention relates to a process for preparing a cyclic alpha-keto alcohol, especially a 6-hydroxycyclohexenone of the formula 1a or 1b, from a cyclic alpha-keto enol, especially a 6-hydroxycyclohexadienone of the formula 2a or 2b, using a reducing agent. This reducing agent is selected from hydrogen gas, a secondary alcohol, formic acid and the salts of formic acid or from a mixture of at least two representatives of these classes of compound. The invention further embraces the use of the 6-hydroxycyclohexadienones of the formulae 2a and 2b as intermediates for preparing astaxanthin.
