[origin: WO2016058809A1] The invention relates to a power unit, in particular for a hybrid electric vehicle, having a two-cylinder reciprocating piston engine, which comprises two pistons guided in two cylinders in tandem arrangement and two counter-rotating crankshafts (10, 11) connected to the pistons by connecting rods, and a generator (15) which can be driven by the crankshafts, the crankshafts (10, 11) being mechanically coupled so as to be in phase. The crankshafts (10, 11) are coupled by means of a toothed chain (14) which is toothed on both sides, the first side of the toothed chain (14) being in engagement with a sprocket wheel (12) of the one crankshaft (10) and the second side of the toothed chain (14) with a sprocket wheel (13) of the other crankshaft (11), and the toothed chain (14) and the crankshafts (10, 11) forming a toothed chain drive which is connected to the generator (15).
