[origin: WO2016066643A1] The invention relates to a method and a device (12) for handling flat and/or film material (26) that is wound on rolls (14, 5) and can be used as a packaging material for packaging piece goods, packages or similar assemblies of articles. To maintain a packaging operation, an at least partially unwound and/or used up roll (15) is removed from at least one assembly position (EB1, EB2) of a packaging machine (10) and exchanged for a new roll (14) which comprises flat and/or film material (26). After each new roll (14) is positioned, the outermost layer (36) thereof is pulled out near to or in the region of its free end (50) and connected, particularly welded or adhesively bonded, to a section of a material web (26) being guided into a packaging line, in order to form an uninterrupted material web (26). Previously, simultaneously, or subsequently, the material web (26) pulled from said at least partially unwound and/or used roll (15) is separated from the material web (26) being guided into the packaging line. Prior to removal of said at least partially unwound and/or used roll (15) from the packaging machine (10), a material web remainder (27) which leads to a separation point is at least partially wound up on the at least partially unwound and/or used roll (15) by rotating said roll (15) back against an unwinding direction of rotation.
