[origin: WO2016066617A1] A method and a device (12) are disclosed for handling flat and/or foil materials (26) wound on rolls (14, 15) and used as packaging material for the packaging of piece goods, containers or similar assemblies of articles. In order to maintain a packaging operation, an at least partially unwound and/or depleted roll (15) is removed from at least one mounting position (EB1; EB2) of a packaging machine (10), and respectively exchanged for a new roll (14) comprising flat and/or film material (26), in that after each positioning of a new roll (14), the outermost layer (36) thereof is drawn off near to or in the region of the free end (50) thereof and connected, in particular welded or bonded, to a section of a material web (26) guided into a packaging line, so as to form an uninterrupted material web (26). The material web (26) drawn off from each new roll (14) is grasped by means of a controllable gripping and/or handling device (52) and moved in the direction towards the material web (26) that is already guided in the packaging line and/or to an attaching and/or welding device (32).
