Abstract (en)
[origin: GB2533151A] A probe 10 for measuring biomass in a medium of a suspending fluid and cells, which may be used as part of a system for performing a fermentation process. Two electrodes on the probe are excitation electrodes 14, for transmitting an excitation signal through the medium, with a varying current density along their length. Two electrodes are signal electrodes 16 for measuring a voltage between; and located between the excitation electrodes at a position of high current density, on a current path having the same phase at the total excitation current. The signal and excitation electrodes may have different lengths or surface areas. The signal electrodes may be parallel to and shorter than the excitation electrodes, and positioned in a region between the end points of the excitation electrodes. Alternatively, the excitation electrodes may be shorter. The electrodes may be a conductive exposed length of wire or strip material.
