The method comprises the following steps: sensing the current position of the object (6), sensing the current position of a leading edge (23) of the gate leaf (2), sensing the direction of motion of the gate leaf (2), and initiating the disturbance routine depending on the current position of the object (6) and the leading edge (23) of the gate leaf (2) and depending on the direction of motion of the gate leaf (2). The invention further relates to a such a gate assembly (1) and to a safety device (5) therefor. As a result thereof, danger to persons and the risk of property damage can be further reduced with little design complexity.
