[origin: WO2016131437A2] The invention relates to a method and a vertical casting installation (VG) for producing steel strands, a metallic melt from a casting ladle (1) being supplied to at least one adjoining vertical mold (6a) with mold oscillation (6B), optionally via a distributor channel (2), and the melt solidifying in the mold (6a) being transferred, by means of a cold strand (11), as a hot strand (12) from the mold (6a) first vertically downwardly into a strand support section (SSB) having at least one support segment (8) with continuous support rollers (9) and then to a downstream vertical strand-guiding section (SFB) in which the hot strand (12) is cooled. The aim of the invention is to allow a semi-continuous casting of strands up to very large formats and in particular also from high-alloy steel types without harmful effects on the strand shell. For this purpose, the hot strand (12) is conveyed to the strand-guiding section (SFB) by lowering a lifting means (19), which receives the cold strand (11) at its lower end leading in the direction of casting, and until said cold strand reaches the final length, which depends on the supplied quantity of molten mass and the casting format. The hot strand (12) is only held in the vertical position by guide means (16) that can be placed against the hot strand (12) during the lowering in the strand-guiding section (SFB), no forces and/or stresses being introduced into the strand shell.
