[origin: WO2016183247A1] A system 160 and method for obtaining an orientation independent sensing (OIS) coordinate frame in the context of cardiac mapping with a sensing catheter, comprising an electronic control unit 166 configured to determine a local 3D electric field loop corresponding to one heart beat, create a zero mean version of E(t) over a depolarization interval, compute an [E-dot] value at each of a plurality of time intervals, compute an initial estimate of the wavefront direction [w-hat] from a cross product of E and the [E-dot] value for each of the plurality of time intervals, average the initial estimate of [w-hat] from each of the plurality of time for a best estimate of [w-hat], determine a plurality ofactivation direction [a-hat] (θ) values and using the corresponding surface normal direction [n-hat] (θ) values, compute a composite match score, and choose at least one best value for [a-hat] and a best value for [n-hat].
