[origin: GB2537170A] Multiple sensors, e.g. a selection of fixed and handheld sensors, communicate with a central monitoring system to provide information about the food preparation environment e.g. a kitchen or fridge, and the central system may determine whether the environment is within acceptable parameters and issue a warning if not. The sensor information may be verifiable by processing with a secret value, adding an MD5 checksum, time stamp or encrypting. The sensors may communicate with the central system via a hub, which may scan for available radio frequency channels, determine radio frequency channels used by the sensors and determine an optimum frequency for reliable transmission. A temperature sensor may comprise a compressible thermal coupling substance compressed between a beveled corner or edge of a housing for the sensor, an antenna for a radio frequency communication device being located away from the beveled corner or edge. The sensor may be calibrated by entering a height above sea level and a reference sensed value when the sensor is in boiling water to adjust the factory calibration. A portable unit may communicate with any handheld sensors in the system and may further output tasks on a display for an operative to perform.
