A traction belt (18) for an elevator system (10) comprises a running surface (30) for contacting a pulley (20) and two side surfaces (28) neighbouring the running surface (30), wherein at least one of the side surfaces (30) comprises an outer layer (34) adapted for being rubbed off, when the side surface (28) touches a flange (48) of the pulley (20), such that a differently looking area (40) of the traction belt (18) becomes visible.
