[origin: WO2016198763A1] The invention relates to a method for obtaining an air reserve for a vehicle internal combustion engine during the phase in which the engine is returning to idling speed following the release of the vehicle accelerator pedal. The method is characterised in that it comprises the following steps: detection of the release of the vehicle accelerator pedal; detection of the occurrence of a pre-determined situation following the release of the accelerator pedal, said pre-determined situation depending on the speed (N) of the engine; and, upon detection of a predetermined situation, determination of the lost torque being applied to the engine at that moment and determination of an air reserve torque as a function of the lost torque, and implementation of engine operating variables such as to obtain the air reserve (201, 202, 203) corresponding to the determined air reserve torque.
