[origin: WO2017007599A1] A vehicle, comprising: an engine (20); a drive axle (60, 70); a multi- mode transmission (30) selectively coupled to the engine (20) and the drive axle (60, 70), the multi-mode transmission (30) including: a first gear set (110) having a first planetary gear carrier (118) and a second gear set (120) having a second planetary gear carrier (128), wherein the first gear set (110) is coupled to the engine (20), and wherein the first planetary gear carrier (118) and the second planetary gear carrier (128) are rotatably coupled; a first motor/ generator (40) coupled to the first gear set (118); and a second motor/generator (50) electrically coupled to the first motor/generator (40) with a bus, coupled to the second gear set (120), and selectively coupled to the engine (20); and a controller (210) coupled to the multi-mode transmission (30) and configured to selectively configure the multi-mode transmission (30) into an active neutral startup mode of operation in response to an engine start request.
