Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2541001A] A playing surface comprising a supportive base layer 14, an intermediate layer 15 such as a foam layer 3, and a surface layer 16, wherein the base layer has a first predetermined amount of stability and the intermediate layer has a second predetermined amount of stability and configured to conform to a required performance standard. Preferably the intermediate layer is an expanded polypropylene foam and has one or more downwardly extending energy dissipating formations (impact formations) 6/7 and may be an interlocking tile (Fig 3). The top surface of the intermediate layer may be rough to increase the friction between it and the playing surface, e.g. artificial turf. There may be an impervious layer 17 located between the intermediate layer and base layer to allow rain water to drain off, preferably to the edge of the playing surface. A method of construction is also defined.
