Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2539254A] An optical fibre sensor system is used to determine the type and location of disturbances along a pipeline, such as digging, drilling, tapping, sabotage etc. The system includes an optical fibre 20 buried along the pipeline 35, a radiation source 30 (e.g. infra-red source), a detector 40 and a signal processor 50. The processor analyses values corresponding to the condition of the optical fibre to create a pattern corresponding to a disturbance, and compares the pattern to recorded patterns of known disturbances.
