[origin: WO2017042208A1] The invention relates to an illumination system (1) for illuminating an article (7) to be imaged, comprising an illumination dome (3) and a plurality of identical ambient light sources (8) which are arranged at the illumination dome (3) such that an illumination space (6) surrounded by the illumination dome (3) may be illuminated by the ambient light sources (8). The illumination system (1) comprises at least one spotlight source (9) arranged at the illumination dome (3). The spotlight source (9) may emit a higher light intensity than each individual ambient light source (8). A diffusion apparatus (4) with a diffusion inner element (5) is arranged at a distance from the illumination dome (3) on an inner side (11) of the illumination dome (3) facing the illumination space (6). The diffusion inner element (5) completely covers the ambient light sources (8) and the spotlight source (9) when observed from the illumination space (6).
