[origin: WO2017055031A1] The invention relates to a household appliance (7) having at least one mechanical relay (1) and a switch detection device (8) for detecting a switch of at least one relay (1). The switch detection device (8) has at least one measuring device (16, 18, 19) for measuring an electric coil current (I) which flows through the relay (1) when the relay (1) is switched and at least one analysis device (10) for detecting the switch of the at least one relay (1) on the basis of the measured coil current (I). A method is used to operate a household appliance (7) which has at least one mechanical relay (1). According to the method, an electric coil current (I) which flows through the relay when the relay (1) is switched is measured, and a switch of the relay (1) and/or a delay time of the relay (1) is detected using the measured coil current (I). The invention can be advantageously used on cooking devices, in particular ovens, in particular for switching heating elements.
