The printing unit (200) comprises a printing head (206), which has a printing-head body (210) and a cartridge carrier (216), wherein the printing head (206) can be positioned over a printing surface (401) for a food (117) to be printed. The cartridge carrier (216) is designed to hold at least one removable cartridge (306) for edible printing mass (114), wherein a cartridge (306) comprises a plunger (324), a cartridge body (322), and a cartridge bottom (323) having a cartridge nozzle (326). The printing-head body (210) comprises a cartridge motor (217), by means of which the plunger (324) of a cartridge (306) inserted into the cartridge carrier (216) can be pressed toward the cartridge bottom (323) of the inserted cartridge (306) from above in order to press printing mass (114) out of the inserted cartridge (306) and onto the printing surface (401) via the cartridge nozzle (326). In addition, the printing unit (200) comprises positioning means (201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 213, 214), which are designed to move the printing head (206) to different positions.
