[origin: WO2017109100A1] The invention relates to an elevator system (1) with a counterweight (3) and an elevator car (4), which are supported by support means (5) and which are moved in opposite directions in an elevator shaft (2), or to an operating method for operating such an elevator system (1). The elevator car (4) approaches the counterweight (3) and/or moves past the counterweight (3) in an approach zone (A) in the elevator shaft (2), and the elevator car (4) moves at a first speed (S1) outside of the approach zone (A) and at a second speed (S2) in the approach zone (A), the second speed (S2) being lower than the first speed (S1).
