[origin: WO2017125126A1] The invention relates to a header and loading machine (10) and to a method for excavating rock using such a machine. Rock is excavated using work attachments on an adjustable boom arm (20). The excavated rock is received by a loading table (40) on a front region of a chassis (12) of the header and loading machine (10). The excavated rock is conveyed to a rear region of the chassis (12) by means of a conveyor device. An operator's station (16) and drive and supply units (18) are arranged in a central region and a first lateral region on the chassis (12). Above the chassis (12) a second lateral region, which lies opposite the first lateral region, is kept clear, thus forming a free space (60) which extends along the chassis (12) from a front region to a rear region.
