Alternatively or additionally, the method comprises switching to an engine braking operation in which a first exhaust valve (20) of the internal combustion engine is initially kept closed in the compression stroke and/or exhaust stroke for compressing air and before a top dead center of a piston movement for decompression of the compressed air is opened.
