[origin: GB2549481A] A method of manufacturing a security device (e.g. for banknote or passport), having a relief structure (e.g. a hologram) located in a window section of the device, thus allowing it to be observed from both sides of the device; it comprises the steps: (a) providing a first layer 2b comprising at least a partially translucent or transparent region; (b) applying a pattern defining substance 6 on the first transparent layer, excluding at least one first region (R1, figure 1) on the surface of the first layer aligned with the translucent or transparent region; (c) applying a formable material 3 to a second region of the first surface; (d) forming the formable material (e.g. by embossing) such that its surface distal from the first layer follows the contours of a first optically variable effect generating relief structure in the window region; and (e) applying a reflection enhancing material (e.g. a metal or alloy) over the formable material to form a reflection enhancing layer which follows the contour of the relief structure; subsequently the pattern defining material will be removed (e.g. by washing) including all material overlapping it, thereby limiting the reflection enhancing layer to the relief structure.
