[origin: WO2017198901A1] This disclosure describes a method for handling winding shafts. The invention also relates to an apparatus implementing the method. After being transferred to the side from an unwinder (UW), the winding shaft (3)is turned in the horizontal plane by substantially 90 degrees before return transfer in an orientation parallel to the track, and before being returned to a winder (W) the empty winding shaft (4) is again turned by substantially 90 degrees in the horizontal plane. The fibrous web left over the winding shaft (3) is removed between winding shaft turning stations (11,12).
