[origin: WO2018137852A1] The invention relates to a method for operating a display (100) using a monitoring device (114). The display (100) has a display matrix (102) with at least one row driver device (104) for actuating the display matrix (102) in rows and at least one column driver device (106) for actuating the display matrix (102) in columns. The row driver device (104) and the column driver device (106) each has at least one test connection which is connected to the monitoring device (114). The method has an actuation step and a monitoring step. In the actuation step, the row driver device (104) is actuated using row data cycles (108), and the column driver device (106) is actuated using column data cycles (110). A test signal (116) which has a content that changes with each generated data cycle (108, 110) is provided via the test connections. In the monitoring step, the test signals (116) are monitored in the monitoring device (114). An error message (118) is provided by the monitoring device (114) if the content of at least one of the test signals (116) remains the same for more than a specified number of data cycles (108, 110).
