[origin: WO2018157970A1] The invention relates to the testing of magnetic properties of valuable documents with the aid of a magnetic sensor comprising a measuring sensor line having a plurality of magnetosensitive measuring sensor elements, and also at least one further magnetosensitive sensor element which is arranged behind the measuring sensor elements and is at a greater distance from the transport plane of the valuable document than the measuring sensor elements. By means of the further sensor elements, correction signals are detected at correction measurement points of the valuable document, which lie on the same measurement line as the measurement points. In order to extract the distance dependence of the measurement signals, the relevant measurement signal of each measurement point is corrected on the basis of the signal decrease which the correction signal determined for said measurement point exhibits in comparison with the measurement signal of the relevant measurement point.
