The method is characterized in that repeatedly differential quotients are formed from a difference of successively applied forces F and a difference of traveled setting paths and are compared with at least one reference value, and that the setting operation is terminated in the region of an increase of the process force as soon as the differential quotient reaches or exceeds a predetermined reference value.
