[origin: WO2018202402A1] The invention relates to a method for operating a pressure control system (1), in particular for vehicles (200), having a multi-stage compressor (4), wherein a repeatedly compressed pressure medium (L3) for filling a pressure medium reservoir (20) or pressure medium chambers (3.i; i=1,...4) of the pressure control system (1) is made available by the multi-stage compressor (4), wherein for this purpose – a first compression stage (5) makes available a pre-compressed pressure medium (L2) which is additionally compressed by means of a second compression stage (6), and/or – an already compressed supercharging pressure medium (A) is introduced into an intermediate volume (13) between the first compression stage (5) and the second compression stage (6) of the multi-stage compressor (4), and the supercharging pressure medium (A) is compressed again by the second compression stage (6). In this context there is provision to limit an intermediate pressure (p2) of the pre-compressed pressure medium (L2), fed into the intermediate volume (13), by means of an overpressure valve (26) which interacts with the first compression stage (5), wherein the overpressure valve (26) opens for this purpose as soon as the intermediate pressure (p2) exceeds a limiting pressure (pG) and the pre-compressed pressure medium (L2) is as a result proportionally diverted from the first compression stage (6), in order to automatically adapt the compression performance of the first compression stage (5) by means of the pre-compressed pressure medium (L2).
