The bale breaker (10) is provided with a milling cylinder that can mill off a fibrous bale (3-7) and thereby extract fibrous material from the fibrous bale (3-7), by means of rotation about an axis of rotation and movement along a pre-determined course of travel (sv) at an apex angle or a right angle to the axis of rotation of the bale breaker (10). The method comprises a detection step (S2) in which it is detected whether there is an excess load on the bale breaker (10). The invention also comprises a display step in which the position of the last detected excess load in relation to the course of movement (svv) is displayed on the bale breaker (10) and/or on a display device (30) coupled therewith. The invention also relates to the bale breaker (10) itself. Said method also uses a detection device (12) designed to determine an excess load on the bale breaker (10) and the position thereof in relation to the course of travel (sV) of the milling cylinder. Said method also uses a display device (30) designed to display the position and/or strength of the last detected excess load in relation to the course of travel (sv) on the bale breaker (10).
