A pack hollow (35) is formed in the material web (15) by thermoforming by means of a punch (33) of the forming station (5) interacting with a die (31) of the forming station (5), wherein, during the thermoforming operation, the punch (33) and the die (31) move relative to one another along a vertical direction (V) and a region of the material web (15) is thus deformed between the die (31) and the punch (33). While the region of the material web (15) is being deformed between the die (31) and the punch (33), a forming assembly (43) of the forming station (5), said assembly comprising the punch (33) and the die (31), and the retaining elements (25) of the conveying device (17) move relative to one another in a direction perpendicular to the vertical direction (V).
