[origin: GB2564882A] A method of assessing whether a vehicle is straddled between lanes 12, 14, 16 on a multi-lane carriageway, comprising the steps of: measuring inductance change values from adjacent inductive loops 18a, 18b, 18c situated at a loop site, as the vehicle traverses the loop site; summing separate logarithms of the inductance change values, or taking a logarithm of the product of the inductance change values, to obtain a value; and comparing said value against a predetermined threshold value to make a determination as to whether: a single vehicle is straddling multiple lanes 12, 14, 16, or two vehicles are present in adjacent lanes 12, 14, 16. The method may also comprise estimating the lateral position of a vehicle that is straddling two lanes, and also estimating an inductance change value that would arise if a vehicle was travelling centrally over an inductive loop.
