The surface sensor (30) has a scanning plane (33) which runs parallel to the plane (34) of the roadway, in particular at a height (h) of less than 15 cm, at least having the following steps: - detecting at least one section (32) of the parking space (20) by means of the surface sensor (30), and - detecting the section as a free region if no object (11) is detected within the section (32).
