[origin: WO2020151890A1] The invention relates to a sorting system (2) for sorting items to be sorted (4, 4a, 4b) and to a method relating thereto, comprising: a) at least two input lines (5a, 5b), wherein each input line (5a, 5b) has an input device (6a, 6b) for the items to be sorted (4, 4a, 4b) and a component (7a, 7b) for identifying the item to be sorted (4, 4a, 4b) or its intended address and a removal device (12a, 12b); b) a merging unit (9) for merging the at least two input lines (5a, 5b) to form a conveyor path (10) that has conveyor turnouts (14 to 20) and destinations (24 to 30) arranged along the conveyor path (10); c) a sorting controller (40) able to identify a respective address identifier for a number of items to be sorted (4, 4a, 4b) and to assign a destination code for one of the destinations (24 to 30) to the address identifier and to set the conveyor turnouts (14 to 20) accordingly for an item to be sorted (4, 4a, 4b) dispatched from one of the at least two input devices (6a, 6b) in order to reach the intended destination (24 to 30), wherein the sorting controller (40) is furthermore able, for at least some of the items to be sorted (4a, 4b), to evaluate feedback in order to establish a reception capacity of at least one of the destinations (24) and to control the respective removal device (12a, 12b) for removing items to be sorted (4a, 4b), arranged between the input device (6a, 6b) and the merging unit, such that an item to be sorted (4a, 4b) dispatched from one of the at least two input devices (6a, 6b) is removed before it enters the conveyor path (10) when the reception capacity of the destination (24) assigned to this item to be sorted (4a, 4b) is at least temporarily below a predefinable limit value or is temporarily completely denied. The method and the system thereby allow improved utilization of the sorting capacity of the sorting system, because items to be sorted whose destinations are temporarily unavailable are not even initially put onto the sorting line, but rather are removed from the sorting process again as soon as they are added (recording the data identifying the item to be sorted).
