[origin: WO2019076729A1] The invention relates to a method for producing a code for a workpiece (1) consisting of a metal base material, particularly sheet metal, in which the workpiece (1) is subjected to a forming process. Said method is characterised in that a local modification of an electrical and/or magnetic property of the base material of the workpiece (1) is carried out in a coding region (8) by means of a forming process, and the code is formed by the local variation of the electrical and/or magnetic property. In this way, workpieces can be effectively provided with an inconspicuous code.
