A first exhaust gas purification system (3) is arranged in the exhaust gas system (2), and a second exhaust gas purification system (4) is arranged in the exhaust gas system downstream of the first exhaust gas purification system in the flow direction of the exhaust gas, wherein the first exhaust gas purification system (3) can be bypassed via a bypass (5) using a closure element (6), and the closure element (6) is arranged in the exhaust manifold. The design according to the invention can be used to allow the internal combustion engine (1) to be operated at a high load with a mixture enrichment.
