[origin: WO2019101776A1] The invention relates to a communications system for a digital radio network, which permits an expansion of the coverage area of the radio network, comprising at least one master base station and at least one relay base station arranged remotely from the master base station. The master base station and the relay base station each have a wired interface unit, which can be connected to a transmission line, for wired communication between the master base station and the relay base station. At least the relay base station also has a radio communications unit configured for radio communication with a subscriber station of the digital radio network. The wired interface unit of the master base station is configured to encode a downlink line signal from a downlink bit sequence intended for transmission to a subscriber station, and to transmit same to the relay base station via the transmission line, and to decode, from an uplink line signal received via the transmission line, an uplink bit sequence transmitted by a subscriber station. The wired interface unit of the relay base station is configured to decode the downlink bit sequence from the downlink line signal received via the transmission line, such that same can be transmitted to a subscriber station by means of the radio communications unit, and to encode the uplink line signal from the uplink bit sequence transmitted by a subscriber station, and to transmit same to the master base station via the transmission line.
