[origin: WO2019120829A1] In a method for operating a tamping assembly (8) of a track construction machine (1), a track construction machine (1) having a tamping assembly (8), a drive force sensor system and an acceleration sensor system is first provided on a track bed (21). The tamping assembly (8) is displaced relative to the track bed (21). A drive force (FA), which acts on the tamping assembly (8) and is necessary for the displacement, and an acceleration (az) acting on the tamping assembly (8) are determined. A ballast force (Fs) effective between the tamping assembly (8) and the track bed (21) is defined using the drive force (FA) and the acceleration (az) and is evaluated.
