[origin: WO2019162087A1] A method (S1-S7) is used to operate a food heating device (1), in which first microwave measuring radiation (MW1) of a first measurement frequency (f1) and second microwave measuring radiation (MW2) of a second measurement frequency (f2) different from the first measurement frequency (f1) are simultaneously emitted into a treatment area (2) of the food heating device (1), superimposed microwave measuring radiation received from the treatment area (2) is measured, and a thermal state of food (L) in the treatment area (2) is determined on the basis of an evaluation of at least one beat property (B) of the superimposed microwave measuring radiation. A food heating device is set up to allow the method to run and, for this purpose, has at least one microwave transmitter (3a, 3b) for emitting the first microwave measuring radiation (MW1) and the second microwave measuring radiation (MW2) into the treatment area (2) and at least one microwave measuring apparatus (7a, 7b) for measuring superimposed microwave measuring radiation from the treatment area (2). The invention can be particularly advantageously applied to cooking devices having a microwave function for heating food, in particular microwave ovens and combined ovens/microwave ovens.
