Abstract (en)
[origin: GB2571734A] A birthing aid 10 for livestock, such as cattle or cows with dystocia, comprising an inflatable member 12, fluid commination 17 means to allow the device to be inflated or deflated, the inflatable member comprising two lateral sections 32, 33, a proximal front section 34 and a distal rear section 35, where the lateral width is greater than the longitudinal length. A central portion 30 defines a first void 36 and a second void 37 separated by a gripping portion 20. In use, the device is positioned within the birth canal of a cow in a deflated position, prior to the passage of the calf. The user can hold the gripping portion 20 so that the device remains in the birth canal during contractions. The device is inflated to replicate the size of the presenting foetus, such that the muscles of the birth canal are dilated sufficiently for labour to progress. There may be a supporting member 14 about which the inflatable member 12 is wrapper prior to insertion in the animal.
