[origin: WO2020016218A1] The invention relates to a circular knitting machine having a needle cylinder (11), which rotates about a vertical axis, and a sinker ring (19), which rotates with the needle cylinder (11). The needle cylinder (11) is provided, in the outer edge region thereof, with vertically controllable bearded needles (2) having needle hooks open at the bottom as stitch-forming elements. For each bearded needle (2) on the needle cylinder (11), a hold-down sinker (3), which supports the stitch formation, is retained on the sinker ring (19) so as to be horizontally slidable in the radial direction. Furthermore, for each bearded needle (2) on the needle cylinder (11), a pressing sinker (4) is retained on the sinker ring (19) so as to be horizontally slidable in the radial direction, in order to close the hook tip of the bearded needle (2) by pressing the needle tip against the needle shaft. The pressing sinkers (4) are each arranged on the sinker ring (19) between two adjacent hold-down sinkers (3). The needle wear can be reduced by means of the circular knitting machine according to the invention; furthermore, the selection between weft knitting and warp knitting as stitch-forming techniques within a single machine is enabled.
