[origin: WO2020079647A1] Apparatus, systems, and methods disclosed herein are useful for sampling in a mass spectrometry systems. In particular, methods disclosed include functionalizing an outer surface of elongate sampling element, for example, a glass or silica rod with a polypeptide that preferentially binds to an analyte. The elongate sampling element extends and is configured for insertion into an open port sampling interface of a mass spectrometry system for detection and analysis of the analyte.
