[origin: WO2020094750A1] According to the invention, it has been found that when cultivating PUFA-producing cells, if the quantity of sulfate to be used is selected such that the sulfate concentration is constantly above null in the last phase of the fermentation but at the same time constantly below the saturation threshold of the cells, a biomass is obtained which has an increased mass content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the final product. The method also exhibits a high product/substrate and space/time yield.
