[origin: WO2020143895A1] The invention relates to a device (5) and a corresponding method for separating security documents, particularly bank notes, having a feeding device (7), which is designed to feed a topmost security document (2) of a stack (3) of security documents to a withdrawal device (8), which is designed to withdraw the security document (2) from the stack (3); a conveying device (4, 6), which is designed to receive the stack (3) and to convey it relative to the feeding device (7); at least one distance sensor (16, 17), which is designed to detect at least one distance (d, d') of the topmost security document (2) of the stack (3) received by the conveying device (4, 6) relative to the feeding device (7) and to generate at least one corresponding distance sensor signal; and a control device (9), which is designed to control the conveying of the stack (3) relative to the feeding device (7) and/or the position of the feeding device (7) relative to the stack (3), particularly relative to the topmost security document (3) of the stack (3), based on the at least one distance sensor signal.
