[origin: WO2020164948A1] The invention relates to a method for operating a turbocharger (ATL) of an internal combustion engine, the turbocharger being operatively connected to an electrical machine, and the rotation speed of the turbocharger being adjustable via the electrical machine. The method comprises: determining a steady-state or dynamic operating state of the internal combustion engine; and reducing an actual turbocharger rotation speed via the electrical machine to comply with an upper rotation speed limit of the turbocharger, wherein the electrical machine is operated as a function of the operating state of the internal combustion engine.
