[origin: WO2019072342A1] An apparatus and method for stretching moving web-like material in a direction transverse to the movement direction, comprising a cylinder (18) with a longitudinal axis (24) and a lateral surface, wherein the longitudinal axis (24) defines an axial direction and the cylinder (18) can be made to rotate about the longitudinal axis, and wherein the lateral surface forms a bearing surface for the material, also comprising guide means (20) for guiding the material, during operation of the apparatus, such that it rests on the bearing surface of the rotating cylinder (18) over a certain angle range, and further comprising first and second retaining means (26) by way of which a respective one of two peripheral regions of the material which are located opposite one another in the axial direction are retained while the material is resting on the bearing surface of the cylinder (18), wherein the first and second retaining means (26) are designed to execute a relative movement away from one another, within the angle range, in the axial direction and to stretch the material in the axial direction.
