Es wird ein Verfahren zur Markierung und Identifizierung einer Haut (1) gezeigt, bei dem ein Identifizierungscode (2) in der Haut (1) vorgesehen wird, wobei der Identifizierungscode (2) Löcher (3) aufweist, welche die Haut (1) vollständig durchdringen und den Identifizierungscode (2) bilden. Um die Zuverlässigkeit des Verfahrens zu erhöhen, wird vorgeschlagen, dass zur Bildung des Identifizierungscodes (2) Langlöcher (3.1, 3.2) in die Haut (1) eingebracht werden, welche sich jeweils entlang einer Längsrichtung (4.1, 4.2) erstrecken, wobei zumindest zwei Langlöcher (3.1, 3.2) mit ihren Längsrichtungen (4.1, 4.2) normal zueinander in die Haut (1) eingebracht werden.
