[origin: WO2021186087A1] The invention relates to a process for preparing trimethylplatinum(IV) iodide and also to trimethylplatinum(IV) iodide obtainable by this process and to the use thereof as reactant for the preparation of platinum(IV) compounds, as precatalyst and as catalyst. The invention likewise provides the platinum(IV) compounds thus obtainable and the use thereof as precursors for the deposition of platinum layers and platinum-containing layers on a surface of a substrate. The invention additionally relates to a substrate having, on one surface, a platinum layer or a platinum-containing layer, and to a process for producing an electronic component, especially an electronic semiconductor component, or an electrode for a fuel cell using a platinum(IV) compound, obtainable using trimethylplatinum(IV) iodide obtainable by means of the process described here.
