[origin: WO2020216482A1] The invention relates to a method for automatically setting and maintaining a defined distance between a rotatably mounted cylinder (4) and at least one further component of a textile machine, wherein: the cylinder and the at least one further component have a card clothing or a separating knife; the cylinder (4) and the at least one further component are connected to an electrical energy source but are electrically isolated from each other; at least one component is brought with the card clothing or separating knife thereof into contact with the card clothing of the cylinder (4), and at least one electrical contact is established, so that said distance (a) between the at least one component and the cylinder (4) is stored as a reference value in the machine controller, and the machine controller specifies a distance (a1, a2, a3) between the at least one component and the cylinder (4) as a command variable (F) for a regulator (R), and the regulator (R) actuates an actuator (A) by means of a control variable (S) to produce the distance (a1, a2, a3). The invention also relates to a textile machine.
