The problem of providing a method for determining the switching state of at least one power switch module, by means of which method particularly fast and reliable protection of the at least one power switch module or of the converter can be provided in the event of malfunctions, is solved for a method for determining a switching state of at least one power switch module in a converter by virtue of the fact that at least one power switch module is switched into the nonconducting switching state, in which the switching state of the at least one IGBT power switch (2, 3) of the at least one power switch module is brought into the nonconducting state, and the switching state of the power switch module in the nonconducting state is evaluated, a switching state signal (5a, 6a) being generated according to the detection of a fault current in the nonconducting switching state of the power switch module, which switching state signal is used to control the converter.
