[origin: WO2021099077A1] The invention relates a method for operating a system of the iron and steel industry for producing a metal product using a separating or forming device. According to the invention, for the metal product to be produced, the actual value of a characteristic variable is calculated over a longitudinal portion of the metal product, wherein the characteristic variable represents the resistance of the metal product in relation to separating or forming processes. The calculated actual value pIst for the characteristic variable p is then compared with a predefined threshold value, which characterises the performance of the separating or forming device provided in the system. The separating or forming only actually takes place when the actual value of the characteristic variable of the metal product is lower than the threshold value, i.e. when the performance of the device is sufficient to separate or form the metal product. If the comparison shows that the actual value of the characteristic variable is greater than the threshold value, according to the invention, before separating or cutting the metal product, said metal product is locally processed in the corresponding longitudinal portion, such that the actual value of the characteristic variable falls below the threshold value.
