[origin: WO2021156210A1] The invention relates to a device (10) for applying viscous material to workpieces, comprising a rotary lance (14) provided in a holder apparatus (12) so as to rotate about an axis of rotation running in a longitudinal direction (16), the lance having at least one material outlet (18), wherein: a needle valve (22) is associated with each material outlet (18), the longitudinally (16) extending valve needle (24) of which valve is used to close each material outlet (18) on a valve seat; and each valve needle (24) has an associated cylinder (26), in the plunger chamber (28) of which a plunger (30) can be moved by pressure applied by means of a fluid, the valve needle (24) being permanently connected to the plunger. According to the invention: a tappet (52) is connected to each plunger (30), the tappet, at its upper end facing away from the at least one valve seat, being sealingly guided out of the associated plunger chamber (28); the rotary lance (14) has a measuring element (36) which can be acted upon by the tappet (52) and moved in the longitudinal direction (16); and the holder apparatus (12) has a sensor (34) for determining the position of the measuring element (36).
